Cut-Outs & Fuses.

Every Street Light has a Fused Cut Out Unit to Protect the Circuit in the event of a electrical fault, this may  be installed by the Local Council also known as a Private Supply, which is fed from a feeder Pillar or a Lighting Column also known as the Lamp Post. But most cases the Cut Out is installed by the Local Electricity Supply Company, in the case of Liverpool would be MANWEB, (Merseyside And North Wales Electricity Board), who are now Scottish Power PLC. This intern is connected to the main electricity Supply. In the event of feeder Pillars and High Mast Lighting the Cut-Out used would be a 60 or 80 amp Three Phase Cut-Out which uses 3 x 60 or 100 amp Fuses to Protect each Phase  Circuit, Three Phase Supplies are also adopted for Multiple Street Lighting Circuits which have the advantage of in the event of a Fault blowing the Fuse in the Lighting Column and the fault is high enough to blow one of the Main fuses on each Phase then instead of the complete Street  being plunged into darkness only every 4 street Lights would go out. Smaller Cut-Outs are installed in the Lighting Column (Lamp Posts) also fitted when the Cut Out is installed by the Electricity Company is a secondary Fuse or in the cases of a Double Street Light 2 fuses to protect each Light, in  the event of a fault, also the same Cut-out may be installed by the Council/Contractor in other Street Furniture (Bus Stops, Road Signs, Bollards etc.) which are supplied from the nearest lighting Column or feeder pillar.
